3 Steps to Create The Perfect Natural Regimen: Pt 3 - Must Have Building Blocks
Before we delve into the nitty-gritty of curl care, it's important to determine your profile. This profile includes your curl characteristics, outlines your curl goals, and gives you a few insights. You can also DIY your own profile using the first steps in this series.
Step 1: Understand Your Curls
Step 2: Setting Curl Goals
Building Your Regimen
With your curl profile locked in, let's dive into the essential components you’ll need for happy healthy hair. We call these elements; these can be divided into three elements into 3 big buckets — maintain, style, and treat. Your profile will help guide you towards which of the elements you’ll need to incorporate into your regimen and how often you’ll complete that activity.
1. Maintain
The maintenance portion of your regimen contains all the things your curls need to thrive. Regimen elements that fall into this area happen day to day and include items like cleansing, conditioning, moisturizing, detangling, etc. Consistency and patience is key here!
2. Style
Styling is pretty straightforward. These are the techniques responsible for giving you the lewks you’ll be serving out in the world and include items like twist outs, wash-n-goes, flat twists, braids, bantu knots, presses, cuts etc. Learn how to use these on your own or connect with a natural hair specialist.
3. Treat
Every now and then you may run into an issue with your curls like excessive dryness, breakage, limpness, split ends, dullness. Treatment elements include items like hydration/steam treatments, trims, deep conditioning, clarifying, protein treatments, the list goes on and on.
Let’s take a look at how this comes together IRL
After taking our curl quiz Frankie learned that she has the following curl characteristics.
Porosity - Medium
Density - High
Length - Chin Length
Curl Type - Coily (4B)
Strand Size - Fine
She also let us know what her current day to day curl care included.
While Frankie isn’t particular with the brand of cleansing/conditioning agents she uses, she does aim for products without sulfates. She currently washes and conditions her hair every other week. She detangles during conditioning in the shower. She moisturizes using the LOC method, layering water (with continuous spray bottle), Camile Rose Natural Curl Love Moisture Milk, and Shea Butter from the farmers market. She prefers to use satin pillowcases because bonnets make her too hot at night — totally understandable. And her go to style is a wash-n-go. She doesn’t have a regular stylist and goes in for professional services only for special occasions. When she does she opts for crochet braids.
Frankie is also battling with fairly dry hair and higher than normal breakage in a few spots around her head. She’s focused on reducing that breakage as much as possible.
Treat
Clarify - 1X monthly (swap w/ Shampoo 1X a month)
Deep Condition - 2X Monthly
Steam Treatment - 2X monthly
Trim - 1X quarterly (min)
Maintain
Shampoo - 4X monthly (increase cleansing frequency)
Condition - 1X weekly
Moisturize - 3X weekly (reduce moisturizing frequency and remove heavy butters to prevent buildup)
Seal - 3X weekly
Sleep Prep - 7X weekly
Style
Wash n Go
Flat Twists (lower tension protective style than crochet)
After about 2 months of using the regimen tweaks recommended above Frankie is already seeing her thinning areas coming back to life. She’s also let us know that her hair also feels softer and stays moisturized for longer periods of time. We can’t wait to see her progress over the coming months.
