Whether you're looking to control frizz or enhance curl definition, this guide will help you take your natural curly hair care routine to the next level. So grab a pen and paper, get ready to write down your goals, and let's start working towards #curlgoals!

Why goal setting is crucial to happy healthy curls

Chances are, you’ve said something like my curls never act right or my hair is always dry, but never quite move forward from there. Want to know why? Because you’ve only IDed concerns you’re having; and let’s face it knowing the concerns alone doesn’t do much to help actually fix the problems you’re having.

Making progress is all about switching up your perspective. Setting goals focused on solving these concerns is a proven way to ensure that you at minimum get closer to the curls of your dreams.

How? Let’s take a closer look at a few reasons how setting goals for your natural hair will help you achieve those curl goals:

They give direction to your routine

Creating specific goals for your natural hair care routine provides clear guidance on the necessary steps to take for optimal curl success. For example, if your goal is to define your curls better, then your regimen should include steps that promote definition such as keeping levels of moisture up and maybe even throwing in a product that supports curl definition. Now that you know what you’re looking for you can go after it.

They help track progress

By setting specific goals, you can track and monitor your progress over time. This allows you to see what's working and what's not so that you can adjust your routine accordingly. Let’s say your goal is to grow your TWA out. Sure you can eyeball it, but with shrinkage at play and hair growing relatively slowly, that can be hard. Plus what does grow your TWA out actually mean? What length do you specifically want to grow your hair to? Setting a numerical goal and tracking growth with length checks periodically would be a much clearer way to see your progress or lack thereof.

They motivate you

Setting achievable goals for your natural hair gives you something to work towards and boosts motivation levels when progress is made towards each goal. Fast forward a few months, you have set your goal and you can see you’ve added 2 inches of length. Exciting, right? You know all that hard work is paying off — and you’re like me — you are way more likely to stick with the regimen you’re using! It’s working after all.

They hold you accountable

Goals create accountability in our lives which translates into our hair care as well! When we have a set of objectives in mind tied to dates, it becomes easier to stay committed and focused on achieving them. In fact, goals that are written down are 42% more likely to be reached. Needless to say, we are huge fans of jotting down your curl goals.

SMART Curl Goals are key to success

Setting goals for natural hair can be an overwhelming process. It can often feel like success is determined by a never-ending list of things to do and buy. The good news is that breaking down your natural hair into manageable goals will make the journey towards beautiful, healthy natural hair easier.

One of the best ways to do that is by using SMART goal setting-- that's an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. It basically means that your goals should be tailored specifically to your natural hair needs AND something you can track and measure over time with ease. These goals should also have realistic expectations within the timeframe you've set. For example, instead of using this super vague goal:

“I want to grow my hair out”

A better goal, a SMARTer goal would look something like this:

“I will follow XYZ regimen over the next year to grow my hair 6 inches.”

Give yourself the extra support needed to reach your natural crowning glory with SMART curl goals. You can download a worksheet to help you get rolling here.

Of course, Trymyfab’s regimen builder was designed with this in mind — plus the whole team is here for girl — but if you decide to set and track goals on your own we are still proud of you! Just pinky promise us you will be patient and loving to yourself on the journey. This natural thing is hard!

Tracking progress leads to better results

Setting and tracking progress for your curly hair goals is an incredible way to improve the results of your regimen. Taking the time to measure progress in whatever form - from photos or journaling - is key to understanding what works best for you and your beautiful hair.

Keeping track of progress also gives you feedback on what strategies are more effective, so you can keep on honing in on those that work best. With frequent and consistent monitoring alongside your goal setting, you’ll get closer and closer to achieving consistently beautiful curls!

The notes and insights features within our regimen builder are an easy way to stay on top of tracking progress — we even automate feedback and help you make adjustments to your regimen while your goals are in flight!

Taking it home

Just behind understanding your curl characteristics, the most important part of creating an effective curl regimen is goal setting. Remember to set SMART goals, track your progress, and don’t forget—goals should not be static but instead constantly evolving as your hair changes over time.

And ALWAYS keep in mind that nurturing your tresses requires patience and perseverance. Write down goals and track progress for the best possible outcome for success.
